Helmet Giveaway Explanation from Adam provost

For Fan Appreciation Day this season we decided to try something different in regards to giving away prizes for which I’ve had many people comment on by email, forums and phone calls and wanted to make sure everyone understands the reasoning behind the promotion.

While doing the promotion during the second quarter of the game -- we had over 40 staff members throwing over 600 t-shirts into the crowd throughout the stadium. Of those 600 t-shirts there were 50 specially marked t-shirts with the player’s numbers signifying that they have won a game-used helmet. Of the 40 staff members throwing t-shirts into the crowd not one of them knew that they were throwing anything more than a regular t-shirt creating a truly random giveaway. Each section of the stadium on the south side, north side and endzone were distributed an equal amount of winning t-shirts.

The reason why we decided to go in this direction is the failure in previous fan appreciation days of executing prize giveaways. In the first year we tried to do giveaways through the Dofasco TigerVision and only 20% of prizes were ultimately picked up and we had complaints that they weren’t random enough. In the last two years we tried giving away prizes by the lineup cards but this was also controversial because we only pass out lineup cards to the first 15,000 fans in attendance and once again only a slightly larger number of prizes were claimed.

The success of this promotion was that over 95% of the helmets were claimed. Out of those 50 winners – 40 (or 80%) of them ended up being long time season ticket holders. In the end we wanted to ensure that every section in the stadium was represented, that the contest was completely random and that the prize of getting to meet one of the Ticats players on the field and getting their game-used helmet with chin strap and face guard was a prize that would be considered a once in a lifetime experience.

Thank you again for your support this season – we always appreciate your comments and feedback
